Beeville, Tx- Following last weekend's season opening victory over Laredo Community College, the Coastal Bend soccer program hosted a another familiar opponent on Friday September 6th, the Paris Junior College Dragons. The match between the Cougars and Dragons would be the second Region XIV Conference match for Coastal Bend.
CBC lost all three matches to PJC during the 2018 campaign. In the beginning of the season, Paris would beat Coastal Bend, 4-0 to take the first match up. For the second meeting, Coastal Bend would force the match to go into overtime, but fell short, 3-2 at Home. During the Region XIV Semifinals for playoffs, both teams would square off again. Both clubs played hard till the bitter end, but the Dragons would once again, edge out the Cougars.
For the first meeting of the 2019 season, Paris Junior College would travel down to Beeville, Tx. In the first 45 minutes of the match, both clubs each squandered potential goals as halftime approached.
During the second half of the match, CBC and PJC both picked up their intensity as game play picked up due to frustration and the south texas heat and humidity. Yellow cards were passed out during the second half to both clubs for misconduct to each, Coastal Bend and Paris.
At the end of 90 minutes, the match was forced into overtime following a scoreless performance from the Dragons and Cougars. Two, 10 minute sudden death period would be played, until a team scored ending the match. If both clubs did not score in the allotted time, the match would end in a draw.
After finishing the first period of overtime scoreless, both teams continued to play hard and battle out the match. Fortunately for CBC, the match would not conclude until the last 20 seconds of the second overtime period, as Gabriel Campora scored the Golden Goal to push Coastal Bend to victory. Campora saved the match again, as he scored the game winning goal off a penalty kick during the season opening match against LCC. Both Ryan Lewis and Ross Murphy would receive credit with assists on the game winning goal for CBC.
In his first official start in the pipes, CBC Goalkeeper, Lewis Tyler helped provide the Cougars with a shutout. Tyler saved all nine attempts from the Dragons.
On Saturday, September 7th, the Coastal Bend soccer team would put their two game conference win streak to the test with a matchup against #11 ranked Northeast Texas Community College. The match would mark the third consecutive home game for the Cougars, in the past week.
Last season in 2018, Coastal Bend lost both matches against NTCC. The first match heavily favored the Eagles as the beat the Cougars, 4-0. Later in the season, both clubs met up again for the second match of season, this time it would be a dog fight but the Eagles would escape with a narrow victory, beating CBC, 2-1.
Northeast Texas rolled into town on Friday for their afternoon match on Saturday with Coastal Bend. The Eagles had just beaten Laredo CC on Friday, 2-1 before they arrived in Beeville.
The afternoon affair started out to a gritty, defensive match for both clubs in the first half of play. Coastal Bend and Northeast Texas each had opportunities to net a goal in the first half, but both came up empty.
In the second half of the match, the Eagles took the lead with a goal from Fernando Garcia in the 62nd minute of play. As shots on the goal were difficult to come by, CBC had a few attempts to tie the match up but fell shorthanded. Coastal Bend was relentless in their efforts to score until the final whistle, as the Eagles would end up winning the match, 1-0.
CBC will wrap their five match homestand as they host Tyler Junior College on Friday, September 13th at 3:00 PM and Jacksonville College on Saturday, September 14 at 3:00 PM.
