Cougar Baseball Begins Season, Wins One Out of Three.

Beeville, TX-  The Coastal Bend College baseball program has officially started! CBC was set to begin their season in Galveston, TX at the Galveston College Invitational this past weekend, but mother nature had other plans, forcing the games to be relocated to Joe Hunter Field. The Cougars new schedule had them facing Western Texas College, Ranger College and Temple College for the weekend.

Saturday's season opener against Western Texas College was a heartbreaker for Coastal Bend College, as they lost the lead late in a 5-3 defeat.  The ball game was tied at three with Western Texas College batting in the top of the eighth when.

In the first inning, Western Texas College got their offense started when the Westerners doubled on a 3-1 count, scoring one run. Coastal Bend evened things up at three in the bottom of the fifth inning when Damian Rodriguez doubled on the first pitch of the at bat, scoring one run.
 
Right handed hurler, Preston Allen started the game for Coastal Bend. Allen allowed three runs on seven hits over six innings, striking out six opposing batters for his outing. In a relief appearance, Eric Elizondo took the loss for the Cougars. The righty lasted two innings, allowing one hit and two runs while striking out three.
 
Coastal Bend tallied eight hits on the day.  Catcher, Garrett Whitaker and Rodriguez each had multiple hits for Coastal Bend.  Rodriguez also knocked around Eric Martinez, Rodriguez and Whitaker each batted in RBI's to help boost the Cougars in scoring.  Coastal Bend played well on the field as they didn not commit a single error.  

During game two of the weekend, Coastal Bend fell behind early and couldn't come back in a 4-2 loss to Ranger College on Sunday. Ranger took the lead on a home run in the first inning.

After the First inning the pitching settled in and was strong on both sides. Collectively, Ranger College pitchers struck out ten, while CBC sat down nine Ranger batters.

Cougar Pitcher, Logan Henderson took the loss for Coastal Bend. Henderson allowed two hits and two runs over one inning, striking out five batters. Second Baseman, Victor Armendariz and First Baseman, Eric Martinez each hit a Double for the game. Martinez recorded and RBI, as did Shortstop, Isaiah Aguilar. Third Baseman, Damian Rodriguez stole two bags in the loss. 


For the final game of the weekend, Coastal Bend College defeated Temple College 1-0 on Sunday night. In a combined pitchers duel for both Clubs, the Cougars clung onto a narrow win.

Left Handed Pitcher, Cobe Reeves pitched a gem on the bump during the win for CBC. Reeves pitched five complete innings surrendering one hit and striking out 11 batters. Ian Sexton entered the game to relieve Reeves on the mound. Sexton threw two innings in relief out of the bullpen.  Sexton recorded the last six outs, four of which were punch outs, in the Save for the Cougars. CBC pitchers struck out 15, while Temple College pitchers sat down 11.

In the second inning, the Cougars got their offense started when Isaiah Aguilar grounded out, scoring Eric Martinez. The only run of the game would be crucial for CBC. Coastal Bend was sure-handed in the field and didn't commit a single error.

Next up for Coastal Bend will be a three game series in Carthage, Tx against the Panola College Ponies. Friday, February 11th will be a Doubleheader starting at 12:00 PM and 3:00 PM at Panola College Baseball Park. Saturday, February 12th will be the series finale with the first pitch again at 12:00 PM.
